Less Prisons Means More Gender and Sexual Autonomy!: Supporting Trans, Queer, and Gender Variant PrisonersFocusing on the intersecting oppressions, such as age, race, class & ability, that lock a startlingly disproportionate number of people from our communities in jails, prisons and institutional traps of all kinds, this workshop will take a look at how & why trans, queer and gender variant folks become entangled in the criminal (in)justice system, what they face once incarcerated and some strategies for providing immediate, realistic support as we work toward a world with less walls. We'll look at the broader social context that provides the landscape for imprisonment, how the criminalization of sex work, drugs, migration and poverty affect our communities, talk about what sol idarity can look like between incarcerated and non-incarcerated people, and explore how we can build alliances and why prisoner support is a crucial point of struggle for gender & sexual freedom. Bring ideas and experiences to share, there will be plenty of time for discussion. Free zine! Facilitated by Sadie of the Prisoner Correspondence Project and local organizers with DC-specific information on sex worker issues.
