Thanks to the generosity of thousands of human rights supporters, we've launched our Guantánamo Cell Tour, bringing a life-sized replica of a Guantánamo prison cell to cities across America. The cell gives ordinary Americans a chance to see and feel what it's like to be prisoner at Guantánamo - and send an unequivocal message that torture is wrong and detention without trials is un-American.
Our Guantánamo Cell Tour is designed to recruit more activists across the country to put additional pressure on Congress to close down Guantánamo prison once and for all. We want to take the cell to key Congressional districts, the political conventions, and other cities and towns nationwide. The tour has already made stops in Miami and Philadelphia and now moves on to Portland, Maine. The first leg of our tour will culminate in a five-day stop (June 25-29) on the National Mall in Washington, DC prior to our lobbying meetings there and in-district ahead of the July 4th holiday. Along the way, thousands of Americans will have a chance to experience what it's like to be inside a Guantánamo cell, as well as record a protest video from inside the cell, which we'll post onto YouTube.

June 30 - Paul “zool” Zulkowitz of Woodmere, NY, represented by antiwar attorney Ann Wilcox, won an agreement with the United States Government today. Zool voiced opposition during the public hearing with General David Petraeus at the Senate Armed Services Committee chaired by Sen. Carl Levin (D-MI), on April 8, 2008. Zool stood and chanted “Bring them home, bring them home! . . . ,” was arrested and charged with one misdemeanor count of “disruption of Congress.” Rather than a jury trial and possible 6 months in jail, Zool walked out of the courtroom with a diversion agreement and a dismissal of the stay-way order from Capitol Hill.
Camilo Mejía was the first combat veteran to go public with his refusal to fight Bush's war in Iraq, arguing that "no soldier should go to Iraq and give his life for oil." Camilo was discharged and sentenced by the U.S. Military to one year of hard labor. Since his release in February 2005, Camilo has organized tirelessly against the war in Iraq. He has written a memoir that he will discuss and sign on July 2nd at Busboys and Poets.

Intro to Gender & Trans Issues : Ever wonder what it means to disrupt the cultural reification of codified binary sexed embodiment? Well, I'm not so sure either - but come to this introductory workshop to learn about some of the basic terms we use to talk about gender transgression and trans identities. Open to anyone new and everyone looking to learn, we'll be defining such tricky ideas as "gender identity" and "sexual orientation" through a series of interactive activities. If you're not sure what all of the letters in LGBTGTST-SGVGQIQQA stand for, come and find out! And, get your very own assigned reading packet for Gender Theory 338-340 (e.g., a free zine!) Facilitated by Sadie.
Less Prisons Means More Gender and Sexual Autonomy!: Supporting Trans, Queer, and Gender Variant Prisoners: Focusing on the intersecting oppressions, such as age, race, class & ability, that lock a startlingly disproportionate number of people from our communities in jails, prisons and institutional traps of all kinds, this workshop will take a look at how & why trans, queer and gender variant folks become entangled in the criminal (in)justice system, what they face once incarcerated and some strategies for providing immediate, realistic support as we work toward a world with less walls. We'll look at the broader social context that provides the landscape for imprisonment, how the criminalization of sex work, drugs, migration and poverty affect our communities, talk about what sol idarity can look like between incarcerated and non-incarcerated people, and explore how we can build alliances and why prisoner support is a crucial point of struggle for gender & sexual freedom. Bring ideas and experiences to share, there will be plenty of time for discussion. Free zine! Facilitated by Sadie of the Prisoner Correspondence Project and local organizers with DC-specific information on sex worker issues.
Penetrating the tight-knit community of minority drag queens living in New York City, Jennie Livingston's acclaimed documentary was one of several films to be shut out of Oscar contention for its unconventional content, prompting the academy to reevaluate its standards in the face of critical backlash. The film offers an early glimpse at the art of "voguing," the underground dance style popularized by Madonna in her No. 1 single "Vogue." We will follow the film with a discussion based around bell hooks' essay of the same title.
We'll be hosting adiscussion on how mainstream culture is selling queer identity, and why we feel that a critique of capitalism is a vital aspect of queer and trans organizing for wider social justice. Facilitated by members of QTs ATAC.

Monday evening a coalition of peace and social justice groups, including the Washington Peace Center, wishing to foster greater understanding between faith traditions and stopping an illegal and immoral military strike on the nation of Iran will be protesting outside the Christians United for Israel Conference at the DC Convention Center. Join us to protest the right-wing conference, and raise awareness about preventing war with Iran and the importance of respecting world religions.
