They presented a workshop about DC's successful citizen initiative to ban nuclear weapons in 1993, and connected with peace-positive people from across the globe. Following up on the WPC-sponsored Article 9 report brunch by Japanese lawyers at Busboys last November, Jay and Ellen will review the conference, discuss ways to preserve Article 9 in Japan and promote it elsewhere, and talk about the November 15 Dream Bridge Concert to benefit Vietnamese child victims of Agent Orange. First, it is moving from its traditional site at Jecqui Park to Carroll Avenue to accommodate the huge numbers of people and large number of first-class bands that are participating. Second, this year's theme, "A Taste of New Orleans," reflects the decision of the organizers to raise funds at the JazzFest for our friends in Louisiana who are still struggling to rebuild several years after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. PATTY LOVELESS is an irrepressible and phenomenally effective campaigner for peace, non-violence, national health care, the rights of the disabled and an end to the death penalty. 07 / 1 (event) Antiwar Press Conference and Victory Rally Start: 8:00 am End: 10:00 am Body: June 30 - Paul “zool” Zulkowitz of Woodmere, NY, represented by antiwar attorney Ann Wilcox, won an agreement with the United States Government today. Zool voiced opposition during the public hearing with General David Petraeus at the Senate Armed Services Committee chaired by Sen. Carl Levin (D-MI), on April 8, 2008. Zool stood and chanted “Bring them home, bring them home! . . . ,” was arrested and charged with one misdemeanor count of “disruption of Congress.” Rather than a jury trial and possible 6 months in jail, Zool walked out of the courtroom with a diversion agreement and a dismissal of the stay-way order from Capitol Hill. more info
07 / 2 (event) Camilo Mejia: Veteran and War Resister Start: 6:00 pm End: 9:00 pm Body: Camilo Mejía was the first combat veteran to go public with his refusal to fight Bush's war in Iraq, arguing that "no soldier should go to Iraq and give his life for oil." Camilo was discharged and sentenced by the U.S. Military to one year of hard labor. Since his release in February 2005, Camilo has organized tirelessly against the war in Iraq. He has written a memoir that he will discuss and sign on July 2nd at Busboys and Poets. more info

Start: 1:00 pm End: 3:00 pm Body: Less Prisons Means More Gender and Sexual Autonomy!: Supporting Trans, Queer, and Gender Variant Prisoners: Focusing on the intersecting oppressions, such as age, race, class & ability, that lock a startlingly disproportionate number of people from our communities in jails, prisons and institutional traps of all kinds, this workshop will take a look at how & why trans, queer and gender variant folks become entangled in the criminal (in)justice system, what they face once incarcerated and some strategies for providing immediate, realistic support as we work toward a world with less walls. We'll look at the broader social context that provides the landscape for imprisonment, how the criminalization of sex work, drugs, migration and poverty affect our communities, talk about what sol idarity can look like between incarcerated and non-incarcerated people, and explore how we can build alliances and why prisoner support is a crucial point of struggle for gender & sexual freedom.
