WASHINGTON (AP) — Protesters staged a waterboarding Monday outside the Justice Department, calling for a Senate committee to reject attorney general nominee Michael Mukasey because of his reluctance to define the interrogation tactic as torture.

The demonstration came shortly before Sen. Ben Cardin, D-Md., said he would oppose Mukasey during a Senate Judiciary Committee vote set for Tuesday on whether the retired judge should be confirmed to lead the Justice Department.

Peace Marches Draw Tens of Thousands Nationwide

The "October 27^th -National Day of Action," sponsored by the United for Peace and Justice (UFPJ) coalition, attracted thousands of protesters nationwide from major cities across the nation. These demonstrations coincided with the fifth anniversary of the U.S. Senate's vote authorizing the invasion of Iraq. Below are some highlights from the 11 major cities which UFPJ organized the protests.

End the War in Iraq Now! Oct 27th Bus Information to Philadelphia

The Washington Peace Center is organizing buses or vans to leave from the DC area at 9:00am and to arrive in Philadelphia between 12-1pm. The rally and demonstration in Philly will run between 2 and 5, and we will depart to return to DC between 5 and 7, arriving back between 8 and 11 (more specific times will be available by Thursday).

WASHINGTON - U.S. President George W. Bush asked Congress on Monday for $189.3 billion to fund the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, another huge request that faced deep skepticism from lawmakers opposed to prolonging the Iraq conflict.

Bush's request covers military operations for fiscal 2008, which began on October 1, the White House said. If approved it would make 2008 the most expensive year in the Iraq and Afghan wars and would be on top of about $600 billion already approved for those conflicts.

Al Gore's film An Inconvenient Truth was an unlikely box office hit

Climate change campaigner Al Gore and the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change have been jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

The committee cited "their efforts to build up and disseminate knowledge about man-made climate change".
