FREE EVENT!December 14, 077:30pmDCTV901 Newton Street NEMetro: Brookland-CUAR.S.V.P. by December 12, 2007. A Weigh With Words is a blunt, no-holds-barred investigation of the power of language focusing on how words have been utilized to create both conflict and compassion. Interviewing pundits from academia, politics, the arts and the streets, the film unearths rare, candid glimpses of our struggles with appropriateness and ignorance, connotation and contradiction. Of particular timeliness in the "politically correct" yet racially-charged, gender-bent, and homophobic climate of the day, the film digs into the underlying truths of our liquid, living, loving, lethal language and the euphemisms, double entendres and double standards that govern it. A Weigh With Words is the debut production of A Nu View, a special youth program coordinated by Straight, No Chaser Productions, and One Common Unity, and features Representative Eleanor Holmes Norton, hip-hop icon Daryl "DMC" McDaniels, Dr. Michael Eric Dyson, R&B sensation Raheem DeVaughn, hip-hop artist Asheru, and professors from American University, The George Washington University, and Howard. The film was produced by six District of Columbia high school students who participated in every aspect of production. Light Refreshments For more info:RSVP@SNCFilms.comhttp://

December 02, 072:00 to 5:00pmECAC733 Euclid St.Metro: U Street/African-Amer Civil War Memorial/CardozoIn this workshop, you will learn how to build a Catalan 'capgrós' (bighead) for your next march, demonstration, festival, birthday party or theme party. The tradition of 'gegants, nans i capgrossos' (giants, dwarfs & bigheads) is very antique in Catalonia, dating from the 15th century or earlier. The capgrossos’ figures were mock effigies of public authoritative figures or popular characters. Today the figures represent contemporary social issues characterized as politicians, metaphoric images, or singular people. This workshop is for cultural, political or environmental activists, youth groups, after school programs, educators, folk artists, intergenerational family or church groups, community facilitators and crafts lovers. Participants of all ages are welcome (children under 7 must be accompanied and supervised by an adult at all times). Start by collecting all kinds of materials from the recycled bin (yogurt vases, bottle caps & jar lids; plastic plates, aluminum platters & containers; clothing of bright colors, yarn, & wool; silk paper, decorative papers & newspapers; big cardboard box -your head has to fit in! Bring your favorite essential tools like scissors, cutter bee retractable knife, masking tape, brushes, sponges and apron... and your camera! December 01, 072:00pm Petworth LibraryCross street: Kansas Avenue NW and Georgia Avenue NWIn 2008, neo-nazis and racist bigots will be planning more racist terror at the American Renaissance Conference. On Feb 22-24, prominent white supremacists from the US and across the world will gather at the Crowne Plaza Dulles Airport Hotel to vent their hatred and spew their racist venom towards communities of color. The conference organizers call for a white supremacist society and political order. Resistance and Solidarity, a DC-based collective opposing racism, fascism and the cruelties perpetrated by the capitalist system, is calling on Mid-Atlantic anti-fascists to join us, Saturday February 23 at 9am for a day full of actions (in many forms) to protest the racist hate spouted by the AmRen National Conference. In the spirit of the anti-fascists that came before us, let's shut these racists down by any means necessary. But before we shut them down, we need to organize! Agenda items include, but are not limited to: logistics, lead-up actions, protest details, media and legal work. Resistance and Solidarity respects diversity of tactics and recognizes the need for all types of actions, will not engage in philosophical or ideological discussions at the planning meeting. All who share this view, and a commitment to anti-racism are welcome, and encouraged, to attend.
