SCI conducts hands-on demonstration projects and public education programs promoting community sustainability as a basis for long-term peace & social and economic justice. Current major projects include operating a warehouse-scale surplus, salvaged, and green building materials outlet called “Community Forklift” as a regional community revitalization effort and managing several “Low-Impact Development” projects aimed at diverting storm-water runoff from the outdated and overtaxed portions of D.C.’s
Municipal sewer system in order to filter it through specially designed landscape features.
