The mission of the ACLU of the National Capital Area is to protect and expand the civil liberties of all persons in the District of Columbia as well as Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties in Maryland.  These liberties are grounded in the Constitution and include the First Amendment freedoms, equal protection of the law, due process of law, and the right to privacy. Our mission is carried out through lawsuits and other legal actions to protect civil liberties; public policy activities which advocate legislation and administrative policies to promote civil liberties; and education of the public to enhance the environment for civil liberties.
