WPC: Forum on Domestic Spying

Oct 11 2008 - 2:00pm
Oct 11 2008 - 4:30pm
Etc/GMT-4

The Washington Peace Center Presents a Public Forum:
Spying on Maryland Residents by Maryland State Police

Saturday, October 11, 2008   2:00 - 4:30 p.m.
Takoma Park Presbyterian Church
310 Tulip Avenue, Takoma Park, Maryland  (two blocks from Takoma metro station)

Maryland residents were shocked at the revelations earlier this year that the Maryland State Police were covertly gathering information on progressive and nonviolent Maryland activists working to oppose the death penalty and to oppose the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.  For over a year, the police spied on these activists at their public meetings in Baltimore and Takoma Park including the Takoma Park Presbyterian Church.
Come out and attend a very important forum with:

*  Local Maryland activists spied upon by Maryland police:  Maria Allwine and Max Obuszewski with Baltimore Pledge of Resistance, Mike Stark and Dave Zirin with the Campaign to End the Death Penalty
*  Jamie Raskin, Maryland State Senator and American University constitutional law professor
*  David Rocah, lead attorney with the Maryland ACLU campaign to expose spying on Maryland activists
*  Ann Wilcox, of the National Lawyers Guild, who will report on year-long spying against activists who attended Republican National Convention protests in Minnesota

WPC Co-Hosts Vince Bugliosi: Prosecution of George W. Bush for Murder!

Oct 17 2008 - 6:00pm
Oct 17 2008 - 8:00pm
Etc/GMT-4

The Washington Peace Center and Northern Virginians for Peace & Justice hosts...

The famous Manson prosecutor, Vince Bugliosi, author of "The Prosecution of George W. Bush for Murder," Oct. 17 at UDC.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vincent_Bugliosi

Bugliosi’s argument is simple. Bush wanted a war with Iraq. He had to show that preemptive invasion of Iraq was justified. To do this Iraq had to be an imminent threat to the United States.  There were two major problems. Bush couldn’t prove any connection between Saddam Hussein and 9/11. More importantly, his own 2002 classified intelligence estimate findings of the National Intelligence Estimate (NEI) of 2002, classified the original document, and provided Congress with a doctored version to support his claims. By doing this, Bush pushed through an illegal invasion which he had to have known would cost U.S. lives. That, Bugliosi argues, is an act of murder committed against each and every U.S. soldier killed in this war.

Justice for 17 Uighurs Delayed

Detainees’ entry to U.S. blocked, for now

*The D.C. Circuit Court blocked, for at least eight days, the entry of 17 Guantanamo Bay detainees into the U.S., putting on hold a federal judge’s order for their release.  In a three-paragraph order** <http://www.scotusblog.com/wp/detainee-lawyers-seek-familiar-panel/#more-8027*>, the Circuit Court said it was issuing a stay only to give it more time to consider the Bush Administration’s not-yet-filed plea for a delay of the entry until it can pursue a full appeal.  The Court said its order “should not be construed in any way as a ruling on the merits” of the issue of a longer delay pending the appeal.***

Groundbreaking Trial Reveals Hope for Guantanamo

It’s very rare occurrence in my life, when I can step back and say to myself “Wow, I was just part of something amazing.”  But this afternoon, on my walk back from the Federal Court building, I knew that what I had just witnessed something that can only be described as just that: amazing.

In an absolutely landmark, groundbreaking decision, the Hon. Judge Ricardo Urbina ruled, for the first time in the facilities’ history, that 17 inmates currently held in the Guantanamo Bay prison must be released immediately into the United States.  Displaying unwavering poise and determination, Judge Urbina, in finally upholding the U.S. Constitution, clearly stated that this country, this land of the free, “has no right to hold prisoners indefinitely without charge.”  These 17 men are members of the Uighur ethnic group, and are deemed No Longer Enemy Combatants (NLEC) of the United States, a fact that both the Guantanamo petitioners and the government representatives upheld.  Judge Urbina made it beautifully clear that under his jurisdiction, prisoners who were in no way a threat to our national security, and who were being held without any sort of charge, could not be held indefinitely, and he used his judicial rights of lawful interpretation to prove it.  In a time when the rights of Guantanamo prisoners have been slowly improving over time, this decision, and the adamant way in which Judge Urbina stressed the moral base of it, may prove to completely change the way that this government operates in Guantanamo.

17 Uighurs in Guantanamo Released, Appear in Washington Friday!

Today in U.S. District Court in the District of Columbia, 17 uighur men detained and imprisoned for seven years, first in Afghanistan and then in Guantanamo Bay were ordered to be freed and released to the U.S. Judge Ricardo Urbina rejected the government's argument that the men, all of whom were declared non-enemy combatants four years ago should remain detained against their wills in a state of legal limbo.

Judge Urbina ordered the immediate release of all the men, and scheduled a hearing for Friday at 10 a.m. to discuss the details of the men's acclimation to living inside the U.S.

Uighurs are an Islamic ethnic group residing in western China.

Powerful and surprising, this look back at a little-investigated chapter of history weaves together the stories of veterans who participated in the opposition movement, an effort that, by the early 1970s, found widespread support from civilians and troops alike.

Based on the evidence presented here, the answer is "not really" The picture that emerges as Harris unearths a treasure trove of info about mishandled votes and the inner workings of the machines is that they're not only fallible but also highly vulnerable to hacking.

Discussion with the Jerusalem Old City Initiative

Oct 6 2008 - 12:00pm
Oct 6 2008 - 2:00pm
Etc/GMT-4

Foundation for Middle East Peace and Middle East Institute invite you to a discussion with the Jerusalem Old City Initiative: Michael Bell, John de Chastelain, Marshall J. Breger and Arthur Hughes.

At its core, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is about control over Jerusalem's Holy Sites, the most important of which are located in the Old City. Sites such as the Temple Mount and Western Wall are powerful religious, cultural and emotional symbols which must be administered with fairness and equity if the profound needs of the stakeholders are to be met. Without mutually-agreed and sustainable arrangements for the Old City, enduring peace for Israel with Palestinians and Arabs will be unattainable. The Jerusalem Old City Initiative was created to pursue creative governance and management options for Jerusalem's Old City. For over four years, working in close consultation with Palestinian, Israeli, regional and international experts and advisors, the JOCI has been working toward this end.

Appearing for the JOCI will be Michael Bell, Professor of International Diplomacy at the University of Windsor, Canada, and former Canadian career foreign service officer including assignments as Ambassador to Israel, Egypt and Jordan; John de Chastelain, retired general, former chief of Canada's Defence Staff, Ambassador to the United States and one of the three International Chairmen for the Northern Ireland Peace Process and Chairman of the Arms Decommissioning  Commission; Marshall J. Breger, professor of law at the Columbus School of Law, Catholic University of America, a former senior fellow at the Heritage Foundation, Solicitor and Acting Assistant Secretary of Labor, alternate delegate to the UN HRC, chair of the administrative conference of the US, visiting professor of law at Hebrew University and Bar-Ilan University, and President Reagan's liaison to the Jewish community; and Arthur Hughes, former US foreign service officer with service as Deputy in Israel, Ambassador to Yemen and deputy assistant secretary of Defense and also of State, he was director general of the MFO, Israel-Egypt peacekeeping, and is now an adjunct scholar at MEI.

A Letter from Troy Davis

The following letter was written by Troy Davis on September 22, 2008.
This week, two hours before he was to be executed, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a stay of execution to consider his appeal. Their decision is expected soon.

To all,

I want to thank all of you for your efforts and dedication to Human Rights and Human Kindness, in the past year I have experienced such emotion, joy, sadness and never ending faith.

It is because of all of you that I am alive today, as I look at my sister Martina I am marveled by the love she has for me and of course I worry about her and her health, but as she tells me she is the eldest and she will not back down from this fight to save my life and prove to the world that I am innocent of this terrible crime.

As I look at my mail from across the globe, from places I have never ever dreamed I would know about and people speaking languages and expressing cultures and religions I could only hope to one day see first hand. I am humbled by the emotion that fills my heart with overwhelming, overflowing Joy.

I can't even explain the insurgence of emotion I feel when I try to express the strength I draw from you all, it compounds my faith and it shows me yet again that this is not a case about the death penalty, this is not a case about Troy Davis, this is a case about Justice and the Human Spirit to see Justice prevail.

I cannot answer all of your letters but I do read them all, I cannot see you all but I can imagine your faces, I cannot hear you speak but your letters take me to the far reaches of the world, I cannot touch you physically but I feel your warmth everyday I exist.

So Thank you and remember I am in a place where execution can only destroy your physical form but because of my faith in God, my family and all of you I have been spiritually free for some time and no matter what happens in the days, weeks to come, this Movement to end the death penalty, to seek true justice, to expose a system that fails to protect the innocent must be accelerated.

There are so many more Troy Davis'. This fight to end the death penalty is not won or lost through me but through our strength to move forward and save every innocent person in captivity around the globe. We need to dismantle this Unjust system city by city, state by state and country by country.

I can't wait to Stand with you, no matter if that is in physical or spiritual form, I will one day be announcing, "I AM TROY DAVIS, and I AM FREE!"

Never Stop Fighting for Justice and We will Win!

-- Troy Davis

Concert For Peace, People in Solidarity

Oct 5 2008 - 6:00pm
Etc/GMT-4

Join us Sunday, October 5th from 1:00pm to 6:00pm, for the first ever "Concert For Peace, People in Solidarity," to celebrate DC's  multicultural communities and call for end to the raids and deportations taking place in the metro area.

In the context of severe economic hardships, immigration raids, foreclosures, and displacement by gentrification, communities across cultures must stand in solidarity with each other. The festival aims to strengthen the bonds between immigrant and non-immigrant groups as we learn about each others’ cultures and histories and find ways to work together in a common struggle. The festival also calls for an end to immigration raids that only foster terror and division in our neighborhoods. The artists and participants of the Festival stand in solidarity with the families affected by the recent immigration raids in the DC metro area and nationwide.

"Concert For Peace, People in Solidarity" will feature percussion groups, hip-hop artists, salsa bands, and much more. This will be a family-oriented festival that will also host community organization information tables on safety, health, housing, youth programs, immigration, and services from organizations in the D.C. metro area. Religious leaders in the community will also participate.

Christian Fascist Rick Santorum is speaking at the Catholic U on
Wednesday Oct 1st at 8:00pm in great room A in the Edward J Pryazabla
center. Join others who speak against hate by attending his speech and
exactly 15 minutes after he starts speaking stand up on your seat and
turn your back to him. Show him we don't live in the 1600s anymore,
that gay people are human, the women should not be forced to stay in
the kitchen their whole lives, and that women are more then
incubators.

This action can have much power if a large number of people of do it.
We can  prove that Human Dignity is still a Catholic Value even if
some people don't want it to be.

Billionaires for the Bailout Protest

Oct 1 2008 - 12:00pm
Oct 1 2008 - 1:00pm
Etc/GMT-4

As part of a national day of action, “Billionaires for the Bailout” are meeting in the heart of Washington D.C. and making a special visit to their favorite banks that stand to make a profit from the proposed bailout. Come join the crowd of community members saying NO to the Billionaire’s proposal and YES to a real economic recovery package.

Join DC Jobs with Justice and allies in the struggle for social and economic justice to demand REAL economic reform that puts Main Street before Wall Street.

This week, in a “fast-tracked” process similar to the one that brought us the Patriot Act, Congress tried to pass a horrendous give-away package to greedy and unscrupulous bankers and corporate interests who created the conditions and mess we’re currently in. In a time when America wants a new direction, new politics, and new ideas to move us forward, we’re seeing Washington play their same old-games at the expense of the American taxpayer.

Join us in saying NO to the Billionaires for the Bailout!

Taxpayer Revolt: Resist the Bipartisan "Bailout for Billionaires"

Oct 1 2008 - 12:00pm
Oct 1 2008 - 3:00pm
Etc/GMT-4

CODEPINK invites you to join us in a "TAXPAYER REVOLT," two days of resistance to the bipartisan BAILOUT for BILLIONAIRES about to be foisted on the American taxpayer! The House will vote on the bill on Monday, and the Senate will likely vote on Wednesday. Please join us!

Some of us will be performing "Die-Ins" at both of these actions. Others will be simply expressing their outrage. Feel free to bring your own messaging!

Tell Congress we won't take this lying down (even during the "Over Our Dead Body" Die-Ins): "No Bailouts for Billionaires," "No Swindles for Speculators," "Protect Main Street Not Wall Street," "No Taxpayer-Funded Golden Parachutes!"

We will begin Wednesday's demonstration at the office of Finance chair Christopher Dodd, and from there we will march to the offices of Senator's John McCain and Barack Obama.

Let's protest against this latest power grab by the administration and the Congress that never stops TAKING!

Say NO to Nuclear Expansion on the Chesapeake Bay!

Oct 1 2008 - 11:30am
Oct 1 2008 - 1:30pm
Etc/GMT-4

Currently, the Examiner for the State of Maryland Public Service Commission is reviewing evidence prior to making a decision on an application filed by UniStar (Constellation Energy) for the construction of a new 1710 MW nuclear reactor. If built, this reactor would join two existing reactors at Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant on the Chesapeake Bay in Calvert County.

The Chesapeake Safe Energy Coalition opposes the construction of a new, double-size, EPR experimental design reactor on the basis that nuclear power is “costly” to Marylanders. In addition to being expensive, nuclear power is not a healthy, safe, clean, or green solution to satisfying Maryland’s energy needs.

Join concerned citizens in saying NO to more nuclear power at a legal, peaceful protest!

Iran Resolution Shelved in Rare Defeat for "Israel Lobby"
by Jim Lobe
Published on Saturday, September 27, 2008 by Inter Press Service

WASHINGTON - In a significant and highly unusual defeat for the so-called "Israel Lobby", the Democratic leadership of the House of Representatives has decided to shelve a long-pending, albeit non-binding, resolution that called for President George W. Bush to launch what critics called a blockade against Iran.....

...... But an unexpectedly strong lobbying effort by a number of grassroots Iranian-American, Jewish-American, peace, and church groups effectively derailed the initiative,...

War and Poverty: Out of Sight, Out of Mind?

This morning, I rolled out of bed and grabbed a bus downtown. I was determined to be bear witness to what many in our country have never seen, and seldom ever hear of... The last 50 homeless men were kicked out of Franklin Shelter at 13th and K Streets NW. Out of sight, out of mind.Franklin Shelter

I got to the front of the shelter at 6:55 a.m. There were a couple of the men standing out front with some young white folks, mostly students, some anarchists. One man, I had seen the evening before when we chanted and protested in the nearby intersection, was on the lower steps of the shelter loudly expressing himself. I thought of the Biblical figure of John, the voice crying out in the wilderness. Alone but full of truth.
